How steps become miles

Your tracker counts footfalls, not distance. To turn a step count into miles you need one more number: your step length, the distance from the heel of one foot to the heel of the other when you walk.

miles = steps × step length (inches) ÷ 63,360
kilometres = steps × step length (cm) ÷ 100,000

If you don’t know your step length, the calculator estimates it from height: about 41.3% of height for women and 41.5% for men when walking. A 5′7″ person therefore takes steps of roughly 27.6 inches, which works out to about 2,290 steps per mile.

Why two people get different miles from the same steps

A step counter only counts footfalls. Distance is steps × step length, and step length grows with height. Drag the height and watch how many footprints fit into the same 10 metres of track.

The walking rule of thumb (step ≈ 41% of height) comes from gait studies and is what many pedometer manuals suggest. Running roughly doubles the ground covered per step, because you spring off the ground and land further ahead — which is why a runner logs a mile in far fewer steps.

Get a more accurate number in five minutes

  1. Find a known distance: a 400 m running track (inside lane), or a stretch you’ve measured with a map app.
  2. Walk it at your normal pace and count your steps (or read them off your tracker).
  3. Divide the distance by the steps. 400 m ÷ 540 steps = 0.74 m, or 29 inches.
  4. Enter that as “Own step length” above. The calculator remembers it on this device only.

The stride length calculator walks you through this and explains the difference between a step and a stride (a stride is two steps).

Questions people ask

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

For an average-height adult walking, 10,000 steps is about 4 to 5 miles (6.5 to 8 km). Someone 5′4″ covers roughly 4.1 miles; someone 6′0″ covers about 4.7 miles.

How do I convert steps to miles?

Multiply your steps by your step length, then divide by 63,360 (the number of inches in a mile). With a 26-inch step, 8,000 steps × 26 ÷ 63,360 = 3.3 miles.

How accurate is a steps to miles calculator?

Height-based step length is usually within about 10% for normal walking. For better accuracy, measure your own step length over a known distance and enter it in the calculator.

Why does my phone show a different distance?

Phones and watches use their own stride estimate, sometimes calibrated with GPS. If you entered no height in your tracker, it may be using a default step length that doesn’t match you.

How many miles is 5,000 steps?

About 2.2 miles for an average 5′7″ adult walking (2.0–2.4 miles depending on height).

How many steps is 3 miles?

About 6,900 walking steps for an average adult. See the full table on the 3 miles page.

How many steps are in a mile?

About 2,000 to 2,500 walking steps, depending on height and pace. Running, a mile takes roughly 1,400 to 1,700 steps.
