Why a brisk walk takes fewer steps

Speeding up does two things at once: your feet move faster and each step reaches further. So steps per mile go down as pace goes up, even though steps per minute go up.

Cadence around 100 steps per minute is the point where walking starts to count as moderate intensity for most adults, a threshold reported by Tudor-Locke and colleagues (2019, International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity). The step-length change with speed shown here is an illustrative average; people differ.

How to find your own steps per mile

  1. Walk one lap of a standard 400 m track in lane 1 at your usual pace, counting steps.
  2. Multiply by 4.02 to get steps per mile (a mile is 1,609 m).
  3. Example: 560 steps per lap × 4.02 = 2,250 steps per mile.

Then plug your step length into the steps to miles calculator or the stride length calculator.
