Treadmill calorie calculator
Speed, incline, minutes, weight. The incline is where the treadmill earns its keep, so don’t leave it at zero.
Tip: hands off the rails. Leaning on them takes weight off your legs and the calorie estimate stops applying.
161 of those are extra, above what you’d burn resting (net calories).

Where the calories in a 30-minute walk come from
The American College of Sports Medicine splits walking energy into three parts: what your body burns anyway at rest, the cost of moving forward, and the cost of lifting yourself uphill. Move the sliders and see which part grows.
Notice the climbing term: every 1% of incline costs 18 times more per metre than the forward term. At 3 mph, a 10% grade nearly doubles the total. That’s why treadmill incline walking feels so different from the flat.
30 minutes on the treadmill, by incline
Calories for a 170 lb (77 kg) walker. Scale up or down roughly in proportion to your weight.
| Incline | 2.5 mph | 3 mph | 3.5 mph | 4 mph |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | 118 | 134 | 149 | 165 |
| 3% | 160 | 184 | 208 | 232 |
| 6% | 202 | 234 | 266 | 299 |
| 9% | 244 | 284 | 325 | 366 |
| 12% | 286 | 335 | 384 | 433 |
| 15% | 327 | 385 | 442 | 500 |
Converting treadmill walks to steps
Treadmill distance counts just like outdoor distance. Multiply miles by your steps per mile (about 2,000–2,500), or use miles to steps. Wrist trackers sometimes undercount on a treadmill if you hold the rails, because your arms stop swinging.
Questions people ask
How many calories does incline walking burn?
For a 170 lb person walking 3 mph for 30 minutes: about 135 calories flat, 235 at 6% incline and 385 at 15%.
Is the treadmill calorie display accurate?
Treadmill displays often use similar equations but may assume a default weight or ignore handrail holding. Holding the rails can cut the real burn noticeably, because you support part of your weight.
How many calories does the 12-3-30 workout burn?
12% incline at 3 mph for 30 minutes burns roughly 295 calories for a 150 lb person and 375 for a 190 lb person, by the ACSM equation.
Does incline burn more than speed?
Per extra effort, yes. In the ACSM equation the uphill term is 18 times the forward term per unit, so a few percent of grade adds more than a small speed increase.
